Which Velixir to try first
A route through the range in four steps: what you like, the family it falls in, the notes behind it, and a sample before a full bottle.
Shop Velixir at FragranceGemsNo prices or stock on this site. The shop shows both.
Step 1: start from what you already like
Velixir has 24 eaux de parfum and four extraits, and every one has its notes in this guide. Rather than reading all of them, pick the family closest to what you wear now. Each line below names the family, says what it is, and gives three perfumes to read first.
- Citrus and fresh Bright, clean openings built on citrus fruit and fresh accords. Start with Ares, Asteria and Comus.
- Aromatic and spicy Herbs, lavender, ginger and spice, from cool and green to warm. Start with Apollo, Demeter and Helios.
- Floral Rose, jasmine, peony and white flowers, from fruity to powdery. Start with Aphrodite, Artemis and Athena.
- Fruity Pear, lychee, raspberry and coconut in a bright, juicy register. Start with Icarus, Panacea and Artemis.
- Woody and amber Sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and amber, dry or creamy. Start with Himeros, Nyx and Adonis.
- Sweet and vanilla Vanilla, praline, caramel and tonka bean: the sweet end of the range. Start with Adonis, Galatea and Orion.
- Musky and powdery Soft musks, powder, violet, aldehydes and iris-like roots. Start with Ether, Hera and Orpheus.
The families overlap on purpose, because most perfumes list three or four accords: the families page explains how they are built.
Step 2: narrow it down by note
If you know one note you love, go to its page and read down the list. The notes that most Velixir perfumes share are bergamot, musk, ginger, vanilla and mandarin orange; the ones that set a perfume apart are the rare ones such as lychee, tiare, incense or coconut.
Bergamot (13)Musk (12)Amber (8)Ginger (7)Cedarwood (7)Mandarin orange (6)Sandalwood (6)Vetiver (6)Patchouli (6)Vanilla (6)Pear (4)Rose (4)
The lists differ a lot in length: Concordia, Narcisus, Nyx, Paladin and Poseidon have the shortest, with three or four notes each, and Icarus, Athena, Demeter, Galatea and Apollo the longest, with nine or more.
Step 3: read the audience wording with care
The brand's product titles list every Velixir perfume as unisex. Its own descriptions are less even: they lean masculine for six of the 28 perfumes (Adonis, Apollo, Ares, Paladin, Poseidon and Uranus) and feminine for three (Athena, Hera and Selene), and the other 19 do not lean. This guide repeats that as the brand's wording, not as a rule of what anyone should wear.
Step 4: try a sample before a bottle
FragranceGems lists a Velixir Sample Service with 10 ml samples of the eaux de parfum, so a first order does not have to be a full bottle. Sizes and samples says what else the brand lists in small sizes.
The Extrait line
The four extraits, Comus, Ether, Orpheus and Panacea, are new on the brand's own site. Their pages give the notes as the brand lists them, and the Extrait line page explains what the type is.
A rule of thumb that holds for any perfume
A note list tells you what is in a perfume, not how it will smell on your skin, and this guide has made no tests of its own. Read the list for what you want to avoid first; if a perfume names a note you dislike, skip it before you read the rest.
